Many of us want to change the world, and hopefully the majority wants to change the world for the better. Sometimes, though we put ourselves into an essentially passive position. Witness the news photographer. Here is a person who for the most part can only record the events, not change them.
...at least til Speed Grapher.
This anime is about one such reporter who like many noirish heroes is on the ragged edge of burn out, that is until given an amazing power. After a kiss from a "goddess" (actually a poor abused girl who has the power to give great powers or death with a kiss), he now has the power that what ever he can can focus his camera on and click .... EXPLODES!!
This is to be totally juvenile, an AWESOME power. It reminds me of that Kids in the Hall Sketch where they would pretend to squish people's head from across the street by closing one eye and making squishing gestures with their fingers. Sure a death ray would do the job just as well but there is just something satisfying about the idea of saying "Cheese!" and watching someone go up in ash.
Of course you need the proper villainage to really use your new found super power and Speed Grapher doesn't skimp. Seems the little goddess was awfully busy for a while. There are people who are living diamonds (who like to eat ring and ring fingers), crazed dentist cyborgs (open up, waaaaaay up!), and my favorite so far in the series a ballet dancing, leather clad, sociopathic, Mr. Fantastic (watch him wrap his arms around a guy's head and then literally unscrew the poor bastich.)
The "normal" villains are even worse though for my money. The mother of the goddess chick (trade mark waiting for that phrase), is a piece of work. Hating her own daughter for her youth she gladly starves her and jails her treating her worse than a slave. Even worse she actively converts away any ally she may have with her immense wealth. It's all rather sorid, and if there is a theme to Speed Grapher, it is how rotten the world is and it is most rotten at the top.
Which is of course why the world needs changing.
